5 Keys to Developing Your Star People Getting Your People To Step Up

 

Identifying your ‘star’ performers is the first step in putting together your succession plan. Then you need to provide them with the training and development they need to thrive. This training can include leadership skills, mentoring and coaching skills, stretch assignments and exposure to cross-functional roles.

Encourage people to set their own development plans and career goals. Support them in acquiring the skills and experiences they need to progress within the business.

Here are the strategies I have implemented in my own businesses to help me develop my high-performing stars:

1. Hold leadership development workshops that cover the essential leadership skills.
2. Pair your star performers with experienced mentors who can provide guidance, share insights and offer constructive feedback.
3. Expose your potential successors to various roles within the business to broaden their perspective and experience.
4. Provide financial support or time off for further education that’s relevant to their potential leadership role.
5. Encourage your potential successors to build a professional network and engage in industry-related activities to stay informed about current trends and best practices.
