What is your purpose?

askshivani leadership engineers life planning purpose vision Apr 28, 2021

The definition...

the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.

The conversation on purpose has been facilitated for a long time.

Legacy, leaving a mark, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Ikigai are what researchers, philosophers, speakers and humans been speaking about and contemplating on.

My focus for this week is to help you identify your purpose.  When you are on purpose, you know you in flow or in alignment.

The big questions I have for you are:

  1. Do you know what your purpose is?
  2. If so, are you living it?
  3. If not, how will you find it?

Oprah says that your purpose is in little things.  It is not one big thing.

Others say, it is like the 'thing' you need to be doing and ensuring all your decisions comply with that purpose.

Here are some of the purpose/vision for organisations

  • Tesla: To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
  • Nike: Bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete* in the world. *If you have a body, you are an athlete.
  • MVMT: Style shouldn’t break the bank.
  • Warby Parker: To offer designer eyewear at a revolutionary price, while leading the way for socially conscious businesses.
  • Shopify: Make commerce better for everyone, so businesses can focus on what they do best: building and selling their products.
  • Patagonia: Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.
  • IKEA: To create a better everyday life for the many people.
  • TED: Spread ideas.
  • Amazon: To be Earth’s most customer-centric company, where customers can find and discover anything they might want to buy online.
  • Southwest Airlines: To become the world’s most loved, most flown, and most profitable airline.
  • Google: To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

Your personal vision is how you commit to living your life. It influences all areas including family, spirituality, physical well-being, leisure, and work. A clear personal vision is an integration of your abilities, interests, personality, values, goals, skills/experience, family of origin, and stage of adult development.

We also want to explore one the best models of purpose developed by Hector Garcia of the book Ikigai.  Listen to my podcast with Hector here.
