7 tips to retain sales people

So many people are losing key people.  The cost of non retention is high and finding a replacement especially in sales is proving to be more difficult.

Here are 7 tips to retain high performing sales staff:

  1. Get input: Ask them what service or product is not working.  For example if a product is not moving from the shelves, ask them for their view and back story and build into actions
  2. Train and retrain: Keep investing in their training.  For example if your training budget is $5000 for the year for them, it is better to divide that across 4 quarters than one off
  3. Incentives: If they meet their target or excel it, what are the incentives.  Some of these are money but can also be praise or a small voucher
  4. No blame: Don't blame people when sales are down.  Ask questions and work out a plan forward
  5. Don't assume: If their productivity is falling or time off for sickness is increasing, find out why.  Any mental health issues or ageing parents or childcare.  Help them find a solution
  6. Give autonomy: Sales people love having the opportunity to make their own decisions.  Give them boundaries so they don't have to keep running things by the manager who is busy
  7. Train the managers to become mentors: Have managers become mentors.  Ask good questions and get them to come up with possible solutions

In this economy, even if you are doing some of the above or all of it, we have to amplify it.  One good sales person you save, is worth it!
