3 Tips to prevent burnout of your team
Dec 12, 2022In the last month, I have heard so many times 'I can't wait to get to the end of the year' or 'It's been a big year and looking forward to a break'. More clients than ever have lost key people who have switched careers, gone elsewhere or taking a break.
The definition:
Employee burnout is the state of physical or mental exhaustion caused by workplace stress or excessive work hours. Burnout typically starts out slow and builds over time, until the employee experiences feelings of helplessness, failure, defeat, detachment and cynicism. Employees with burnout tend to feel less accomplished and less satisfied with their work.
Impact:
Cost of sick days, decreased performance and productivity
Here are 3 tips (no pun intended)
- Manage workload - Not everything needs to be done by Christmas. As leaders, we do want them done. Engage your employees on priorities before Xmas and what can wait after.
- Encourage self care - Suggest or lead conversations on self care as they get busy socially, to take some time out for themselves. Perhaps share an example of what you are doing in this area. If you are doing team activities at Xmas, make it fun rather than alcohol infused!
- Do a health check - look for symptoms of burnout as it often starts before it happens. It is over a period of time. Encourage them to get help and lend a listening ear to what may be happening for them. You may have an employee assistance program
What do you do to manage burnout of your employees. This is a big topic right and we need to create more conversations for business leaders
