Creating a Culture of Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity refers to the presence of various characteristics, attributes, backgrounds, and perspectives within a business or community. These differences include race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, physical abilities, cultural backgrounds, and education.

Diversity is more than just a buzzword. For me, diversity is about having people in your team that think differently.

If you have experienced different cultures in your business, you may have witnessed the magic that occurs when people with diverse backgrounds work on certain initiatives and projects. It is essential for business leaders and owners to take action to incorporate diversity into their businesses if they want to fully appreciate and experience this magic.

Having diverse people working in your business brings many benefits (besides the fact that it is the right thing to do!):

  • When diverse people work within your business, it allows you to see the bigger picture and address market trends before they emerge. This is like finding a bucket of gold!

  • Diverse perspectives and backgrounds in the business can lead to more creativity and innovation. It enables your business to adapt to the global marketplace.

By drawing from the richness of multiple cultures, your business can create an environment where people think outside the box. When people approach challenges from various angles, they are more likely to generate a variety of ideas and solutions. Innovation thrives in an environment of diverse thinking.

  • Different cultures approach problem-solving in diverse ways. Based on this, you can encourage your people to collaborate and use their complementary skills to find better solutions and make better decisions. These diverse perspectives allow people to consider a broader range of potential solutions.

  • When people from diverse backgrounds contribute their insights, it reduces the risk of ‘groupthink’ (everyone forming one view) and ensures that decisions are based on the multitude of views from the diverse people in front of you, not just one or two of the loudest voices.

  • People with diverse thinking can pivot more effectively when circumstances change. Their ability to draw on a wide range of perspectives allows them to respond to unexpected challenges and find new opportunities.

A business that values diversity in thinking is more likely to attract and retain top people. People feel valued when their unique perspectives are recognised and appreciated, leading to higher job satisfaction and engagement.

You might already be a business leader and owner aware of the importance of diverse backgrounds and what people bring with them, and driven by how to cultivate a positive and diverse culture that encourages people to bring all their past learnings into the present.
