The business of hopes and dreams

The best piece of advice Kerry Packer gave mortgage broker and host of Celebrity Apprentice Australia,  Mark Bouris, was to say 'he was in the business of hopes and dreams not the business of home loans'. There were plenty of business insights to take away from his entertaining address to Newcastle Business Club this month.

Here are my top three:

  1. Focus on your core business but also look at something interesting to you, outside of your comfort zone. For Bouris it is now science which is becoming a focus of the nation. After completing university, he studied the then obscure area of capital markets. That came in handy when the banking sector was deregulated and he set up Wizard Home Loans.
  2. Have a clear purpose and you can reinvent yourself.
  3. He talked about "followership" rather leadership. Good leaders are followed because they are disciplined, inspire people and the team knows that they’ll do what they say they will do.
