Get prepared to take detours in business for family

I was riding my bike into work today and decided I would take the shortest route to work - most direct.  As I was on the busy Darby St, I felt unsafe with all the traffic going into work so decided to take the street parallel to Darby to avoid traffic.  After a few minutes of riding, I then cut back into Darby St.

I realised that I have had to take the longer path in business juggling a young family at the same time for the last few years.  There are great opportunities that present themself all the time in business and although if my focus was just business, I would stick to the shortest route to get there.  The path that I have often had to take is like my bike ride - safer option and then cut back in and get back on track.

Being a person like many of you who wears many hats - business hat, mum hat, wife hat, daughter hat and the hats go on, its about enjoying the bike ride however long it takes.

How do you handle family distractions in managing business strategy?

I find the only way to make both work - business and family - is to be the very best you can be at each of them in each moment of the day.
Yesterday I cut a business meeting short after receiving a call that my son had thrown up at daycare. To finish the meeting, we did a 60 sec recap and confirmation of follow up actions. I made my other business calls whilst I drove to daycare (hands free of course!).
When I got my little one home, all he wanted to do was lay down and read books, play his ipod - chill out.
So I look the opportunity to do a bit more work.
The lesson for me - understand the difference between what you can control and what you can't control and embrace them both. It doesn't make things easier, but is does make them better.

Great post Shivani, I think this is something women in business struggle with constantly (I know I do!). I find that if I chunk my time (only work stuff on work days and only family stuff on family days), it seems to work much better. I also find that setting realistic goals about the number of tasks you can done in a day/week helps too.

So, as I sit here working from home with a sick Mr 3 after being up all night, I, like you, am taking the detour today but hope to be back on track tomorrow :-)
