Golf is the most frustrating sport I have ever played. Unlike tennis which I played growing up, I knew that certain shots worked over and over again and others didnt. Golf however reminded me that what worked on the last hole, did not work at all due to the different conditions. That was lesson one. I realised that this is the case in business and so often with young children that what worked yesterday does not work today.
Lesson two was on hole 3 where I had 2 swings and completely missed the ball. Did not even touch it. As I was playing with 3 others, when the next person who was quite an experienced golfer, I said '' Well done. Great shot!''. Just because my game is not working, you still need to encourage others around you - at work and at home.
Lesson three was that if I really want to get better at golf (which I am not sure I do yet), I am going to have to dedicate time and effort to this. One of my team mates plays atleast once sometimes twice a week. He has been playing for the last 20 years and is also 25 years older than me. He has dedicated to try and master this game. Just because I tried to play after not touching a golf stick for 3 years, I needed to know that there would be some frustration involved.
My fouth lesson was that it was a beautiful golf course over 100 years old and an amazing walk and cart ride. I got to meet amazing people, see kangaroos and other wildlife and enjoy a great sunny day despite other parts of the day not going so well.
My last lesson was that the times I hit a good shot was when I was focussed on the ball (the present) and not where I was trying to hit it (the future). The best lesson for me in that day!
I salute the people that master this very challenging mind game!
